Can you eat chips if you’re gluten free?

While homemade chips are often naturally gluten free, shop bought or those consumed in a restaurant may have gluten ingredients added to them during manufacturing or be at risk of cross contamination from other gluten sources.

Typically, frozen chips and fries are often accidentally gluten free or marketed gluten free, and will in this case carry a gluten free certified label of some kind.

Accidentally gluten free means they have no gluten ingredients in the ingredients list and have no may contain warning or similar warning for gluten ingredients either.

Marketed gluten free means the product carries a certified label for being gluten free, meaning it has been tested in manufacturing and contains less than 20ppm of gluten, making it safe for those with Coeliac Disease.

Where you may see gluten added – either intentionally or by accident – to chips and fries is through batter coatings on chips, which can contain additives and preservatives of all types in order to maintain the structure, texture and taste of the food once it’s cooked.

I wrote this article to tell you which branded tinned soups are accidentally gluten free, and I’m sure it’ll save you more money.

Check it out here if you’re interested.

Batter coatings on chips often have wheat flour in them, among many other additives and preservatives, which is why some frozen and fresh chips and fries are not gluten free in their final forms.

You may also find that some restaurant chips are cooked in fryers with oil that has also had gluten foods cooked in.

This means anything that would have been gluten free before going into the fryer will not be gluten free when it comes out because it will have been contaminated by gluten from the previously cooked foods.

In order to get around this issue, I recommend you check first for a gluten free label on your chips that’s clearly visible.

If it’s there, the product is gluten free and safe to eat on a gluten free diet of any kind, including in Coeliac Disease.

When eating out, it’s best to ask about the cooking process of chips before consuming them in case they’re at risk of cross-contamination of gluten.

Chips that are marketed as being gluten free are often more expensive than other frozen chips and fries which are accidentally gluten free, so you may wish to take the following steps to identify those cheaper options which are also gluten free.

If there is no gluten free label on the product, read the ingredients label and check for any highlighted gluten ingredients.

If there’s no gluten ingredients listed, then look for the allergen statement and check for may contain warnings for gluten ingredients as well.

If in the allergen statement, there’s no mention of gluten either, you can consider the product to be gluten free.

Bare in mind that additives and preservatives added to frozen foods and the like carry their own risks for their effects on gut health though.

If you have a known sensitivity to gluten or other foods, or a condition which is greatly impacted by diet such as IBD, avoiding these preservatives and additives may be a good idea in order to help your gut microbiota and reduce intestinal inflammation.

My overall recommendation is therefore to look for gluten free chips and fries
(either marketed gluten free or found to be gluten free when checking the ingredients list and allergen statements) that also contain very few ingredients.

The best frozen and fresh chips will contain as little as potato’s and some kind of oil, and that’s all!

The less ingredients, and a lack of preservatives and additives used when making frozen and fresh chips and fries, the better your gut health will be overall.

    Are McCain fries/chips gluten free?

McCain have 2 types of frozen chips which are certified gluten free, as well as a number of other varieties in their frozen and fresh range which are free from gluten ingredients and may contain warnings for gluten but are not certified gluten free.

See the list below for the full list of gluten free chips and fries from McCain.

As often talked about in the gluten free community, there are products which can be enjoyed on a gluten free diet even when they’re not specifically labelled gluten free.

By this, we mean that the product doesn’t have any gluten ingredients listed and it also has NO may contain warning for gluten ingredients either.

This is often enough for people eating gluten free to be able to enjoy the product, however, do bare in mind that it’s not a legal requirement (in the UK, at least) for a company to include a may contain warning.

Although, most will include one, as they are expected to do their due diligence and provide safe and clear information to the consumer.

Are Aunt Bessie’s chips gluten free?

Most of Aunt Bessie’s range of chips and fries do not contain gluten as an ingredient and do not have a may contain warning for gluten either, making them gluten free, although not certified gluten free.

Although Aunt Bessie’s do not sell specifically marketed gluten free chips or fries yet, you can find the following 3 styles of their chips and fries which contain no gluten ingredients and have no may contain warning for gluten either.

Aunt Bessie’s Deliciously Crispy French fries, Aunt Bessie’s Crispy and Fluffy Homestyle chips and Aunt Bessie’s Crinkle Cut chips are all free from gluten ingredients and have no may contain warning for gluten attached to them, making them gluten free. However, they are not certified gluten free.
